Mini-bio: Zhang Ziyi is one of the most well-known Chinese film actresses working today, with a string of Chinese and international hits to her name. She has worked with renowned directors such as Zhang Yimou, ...( read more)Ang Lee, Wong Kar-Wai, and Rob Marshall. Of the characters making up her name, Zhāng is her surname (not to be confused with the more common Zhāng which is a homophone but written with a different character), Zǐ means child or esteemed person, and Yí means joy or happiness. Her name is sometimes represented in the Western order (Ziyi Zhang).

At the age of 19, she was offered her first role in world renowned director Zhang Yimou's The Road Home, which won the Silver Bear award in the 2000 Berlin Film Festival. Zhang further rose to fame due to her role in the phenomenally successful Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, for which she won the Independent Spirit's Best Supporting Actress Award and the Toronto Film Critics' Best Supporting Actress Award. Her first appearance in an American movie was in Rush Hour 2, but as she didn't speak English, Jackie Chan had to translate everything the director said to her. In that movie, her character's name, "Hu Li" translated from Mandarin Chinese is "Fox". After this she went on to make Hero which was a huge success in the English-speaking world and an Oscar and a Golden Globe contender. Her next film was the avant-garde drama Purple Butterfly which competed at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. She went back to the martial arts genre with House of Flying Daggers, which earned her a Best Actress nomination from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

For her next drama 2046, directed by Wong Kar-wai, starring many of the best-known Chinese actresses (from Hong Kong, Taiwan and the mainland), Zhang won the Hong Kong Film Critics' Best Actress Award and the Hong Kong Film Academy's Best Actress Award. Showing her whimsical musical tap-dancing side, Zhang starred in Princess Raccoon directed by 82-year-old Japanese legend Seijun Suzuki who was honored at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. She plays the leading role of Sayuri in the adaptation of the international bestseller Memoirs of a Geisha, with her Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon co-star Michelle Yeoh, as well as Gong Li and Ken Watanabe. The movie was produced by Steven Spielberg, directed by Rob Marshall, and released in December 2005. Zhang has received a Best Actress - Drama Golden Globe nomination for her role.

Ziyi
"In China, we don't consider someone truly beautiful until we have known them for a long time, and we know what's underneath the skin." - Ziyi Zhang

Ziyi Zhang Bio:

Ziyi Zhang
Actress and model Ziyi Zhang was the second child born to parents Li Zhousheng (her mother, a kindergarten teacher) and Zhang Yuanxiao (her father, an economist). Raised with her older brother in an urban, working-class part of Beijing, Zhang was originally interested in dance and gymnastics. After some friends expressed concerns that she was too frail, her parents encouraged her to take up dance and gymnastics to build up her strength. Ziyi spent years training in traditional Chinese folk dance, first in elementary school at the Xuanwu District Children's Palace, and later at the prestigious Bejing Dance Academy. Ziyi eventually won the Performance Prize at the 1994 Taoli Cup National Youth Dance Competition. Even though a career in dance seemed promising for the graceful Zhang, she became frustrated with the art by the time she was 15, and opted to pursue acting instead.

She therefore enrolled in the Central Drama Academy in Beijing, where she received her dramatic training. It was at this time she made her first movie, Touching starlight. She also made two commercials, for China Mobile and Beijing Liquor, and appeared in a music video by Xie Xaodong. Shortly after she auditioned for a shampoo commercial, directed by Zhang Yimou (one of China’s most renowned directors). He was using the commercial as a way to audition actresses for his upcoming film and knew that Ziyi was the perfect choice for the part of a young, rural schoolgirl in love with a schoolteacher, and she was cast in the lead role of 1999’s The Road Home. Ziyi won the prestigious Hundred Flowers award for her performance.

.Ziyi was cast in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon after being recommended to director Ang Lee by Zhang Yimou. Lee had originally planned to cast Hong Kong starlet Shu Qi for the role, but after she decided the role would require too much training, she was replaced with Ziyi, who was used to intensive training schedules from her school years as a dancer. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon became one of the biggest hits of 2000 and the most popular foreign-language film in US history, Ziyi's role garnered her awards from critics groups in Chicago, Hong Kong, and Toronto along with two Golden Globe nominations, and many other honors from around the world. As a result of the movie, Ziyi instantly became internationally famous and the hottest young actress in China's film industry. She was widely sought after for celebrity endorsements, of which she choose very carefully brands that would enhance her image, and managed to command the highest fees of any celebrity in China. She also received official recognition by being the youngest person named to the China Film Board, and by being named a Friendship Ambassador to Tibet by the Tibetan Development Fund.

Ziyi
In 2001 Ziyi was cast to play the villain in the sequel to the successful comedy Rush Hour, appearing opposite the comedy duo Chris Tucker and martial arts supreme Jackie Chan. She was cast in the film without knowing a word of English, and despite having taken English lessons, speaks strictly Chinese in the film.

Several film roles followed, including more martial arts films (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), and heartbreaking dramas (2046), all for which she received rave reviews and numerous awards and nominations.

In late 2004 and through most of 2005, Ziyi worked on Memoirs of A Geisha, her first major Hollywood role. While Memoirs as a film was not a critical success, Ziyi's expressive performance won her numerous Best Actress nominations, from the Golden Globes, BAFTA, and Screen Actors Guild Awards, and others.

2005 was a huge year for Ziyi in America, as her profile rose continuously throughout the year. Time magazine named her one the 100 Most Influential people in the world, and she appeared on the covers of Newsweek, Harper's Bazaar, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, and many others.

The release of 2046 led to an avalanche of praise within critical circles, and as the year ended Ziyi's face was immortalized by the publicity campaign for Memoirs of a Geisha. Meanwhile, in Japan Ziyi was featured in over 20 magazines and was the focus of a photo exhibit in Tokyo.

In late 2005 Ziyi began work on The Banquet, a historical drama of set in Tang dynasty China, loosely based upon Hamlet. It is directed by Feng Xiaogang, and was released in the fall of 2006. Since then Ziyi has voiced Karai in 2007's 'TMNT' and appeared in 2008's 'The Horsemen'.

Now Ziyi will be appearing in 2008's 'Mei Lanfang' and 2009's 'Sophie's Revenge' and 'Lost For Words'. While continuing with her charity work and modeling for many brand endorsements.

Behind Ziyi's Name

In the media Ziyi is referred to as Ziyi Zhang and as Zhang Ziyi. The reason for this is that personal names in Chinese culture are different to personal names in Western cultures.A Chinese name is written with the family name (surname) first and the personal name (first name) last. Therefore, in China she is known as Zhang Ziyi, and this is how she has been known for most of her career. But some Chinese people who emigrate or do business with Western countries, sometimes adopt the Westernized name by reversing their own, so she becomes known as Ziyi Zhang. Ziyi stated that the name change was her publicist's idea of a way to appeal to Western audiences and she has asked the Western media to refer to
her as Ziyi Zhang from now on, however some still call her Zhang Ziyi.
